Local stump grinding in Upper Mount Gravatt

Looking for stump grinding in Upper Mount Gravatt? That's what we started with, and it's still our specialty. Troy Moncur began Stump Grind It in 2015 with one grinder. Tree crews kept leaving stumps behind. He saw the gap and filled it. His three boys grew up helping on weekends and now work full-time.

We're based at Wishart, a few minutes down Mt Gravatt-Capalaba Road. That means we know the ground here. The suburb sits on a southern slope, and the soil changes fast between streets. Some blocks grind like butter. Others hit rock at 150mm. We quote on what we find, not on a guess from a satellite photo.

Stumps left in a yard bring termites, trip hazards and regrowth. They wreck mower blades too. We grind 100 to 200mm below ground as standard, deeper when you're pouring concrete, putting in a pool or building. Ring Troy on 0400 721 715 for a quote. We're out 7 days, 6am to 6pm.

Stump Grinding services in Upper Mount Gravatt

Stump Grinding

Our bread and butter. We grind 100 to 200mm below ground level as standard across the suburb, and deeper if you're laying a slab or turf. Access is the usual challenge here, with a lot of post-war brick homes running narrow side gates down to the back yard. Our smallest machine walks through a standard gate and handles steps. On the steeper blocks off Mt Gravatt-Capalaba Road we chock and mat up before we start.

Root Chasing

Grinding the stump is half the job when surface roots have lifted a path or a lawn. Jacarandas and poincianas planted through the older parts of the suburb throw roots metres out from the trunk, and camphor laurels are worse. We chase them back with the grinder where they've cracked a driveway or pushed up pavers. Tell us what's lifting and we'll look at it when we quote.

Tree Removal

Full tree removal in Upper Mount Gravatt, stump included. Plenty of homes here are on compact lots with a neighbour's roof a few metres over the fence, so most removals are rigged down in sections rather than felled. We bring the spider EWP, which is an elevated work platform, a cherry picker on tracks, when climbing isn't the safe option. Then we grind the stump the same visit.

Pruning And Trimming

Tree pruning and tree trimming to make a tree safer, not just smaller. Deadwood over a driveway, limbs rubbing the gutters, canopy lifted off a roofline on the older streets behind Westfield Garden City. We prune to Australian Standard AS 4373, which means cuts that let the tree seal properly instead of shooting water sprouts. Storm season here runs hard from November, so we'd rather look at it in September.

Arborist Services

Full arborist services, not just grinding. The crew works to the same standard on every job. We'll tell you straight if a tree can be pruned and kept rather than removed, and we'll tell you when it's past saving. In the bushfire-prone parts of the suburb we also look at fuel loads and canopy clearance when you ask us to.

Emergency Tree Work

Storm damage make-safe and clean-up. Summer storms come across this ridge hard, and a camphor limb down across a Logan Road back fence at 6pm isn't something that waits. We'll make the site safe, cut the limb back, clear the debris and come back to grind whatever's left. Call Troy on 0400 721 715 and tell us what's down and where it's sitting.

About stump grinding in Upper Mount Gravatt

Upper Mount Gravatt is a working suburb with a lot going on in a small footprint. That mix matters to us. Renters ring on behalf of landlords, body corporates ring about unit blocks, and owner-occupiers ring because a stump is in the way of the shed they want to build.

The tree stock tells the story of when the place was built. Post-war and 1960s blocks carry big camphor laurels, planted for shade before anyone knew better, and they're the ones that lift concrete and block pipes. Jacarandas line stretches near Logan Road and drop purple over everything in October. Poincianas turn up in the older back yards. Newer townhouse developments off Kessels Road and Mains Road tend to have smaller ornamentals, lillypillies and tuckeroos, which grind out quickly but often sit in courtyards with a single gate as the only way in. We bring the walk-behind machine to those.

Ground conditions here are not uniform. One block might be soft soil to half a metre while the house three doors up hits rock under the topsoil. That changes how long a grind takes and what it costs, which is why we look before we quote rather than pricing off a photo. Parts of the suburb fall inside a mapped flood overlay, with overland-flow paths through some of it, so on low-lying sites we check drainage and ground moisture before we roll a machine across turf. Bog mats go down on soft lawn. We'd rather spend ten minutes setting up than leave you with ruts.

There's a council angle too. Brisbane City Council has vegetation protection rules that can apply to significant trees on private land, and plenty of blocks here carry overlays on top of that, including the bushfire-prone mapping over part of the suburb. A gum that's been standing since before the house went up is worth checking before anyone starts cutting. If you're unsure whether your tree is covered, look your address up on the council's property mapping, or ask us and we'll point you at the right search. Grinding a stump that's already down is a different story and rarely needs anything. We don't cut anything that needs a permit until the paperwork is sorted. That's been our position since day one.

Access around here throws up the usual Brisbane problems. The streets running off Mt Gravatt-Capalaba Road climb, and a few driveways are steep enough that we park on the verge and walk the gear down. Around the busway station and the Garden City bus interchange, kerbside parking is tight during the day, so we start early where we can.

We work across Brisbane from our Wishart base, so we're usually in the area anyway. We also grind stumps in neighbouring Mount Gravatt East, where the housing stock and the camphor problem run much the same, and out at Eight Mile Plains on the newer estates. If you've got a stump on the boundary and the neighbour's got one too, tell us when you call. Two in one visit is cheaper than two visits.

One last thing on timing. If you're clearing for a landscaper or a builder, book the grind before the turf or the slab goes in, not after. We've had plenty of calls from people who had a stump ground around instead of out and then paid twice. Grind it once, grind it deep, and get on with the job.

Why locals call Stump Grind It

Family Run Crew

Troy started this with one machine in 2015 and works alongside his three boys. You get the people who do the work, not a call centre. Same crew, same standards, every job.

Stumps Are Our Specialty

Plenty of tree companies treat grinding as an afterthought. We started there. We've got machines sized for most side gates right up to big open-block work, and we know how deep to go for turf, slabs and pools.

Careful Clean-Up

The clean-up is what our reviews mention most. Bog mats on soft lawn, grindings raked back into the hole or carted away, and the yard swept before we leave. You shouldn't be able to tell where we parked.

Upper Mount Gravatt stump grinding FAQs

What's the difference between stump grinding and stump removal in Upper Mount Gravatt?

Good question, and it comes up on most quotes. Stump grinding uses a cutting wheel to chew the stump down below ground level, usually 100 to 200mm, and leaves the deeper root plate in the soil to break down naturally. Stump removal means digging the whole root ball out with an excavator, which leaves a large hole, costs more, and tears up a lot more of your yard. For nearly everything on a suburban block here, grinding is the right call. You can lay turf, pour a path or plant over a ground stump straight away. If you're putting in a pool, a footing or a retaining wall right on top of the old stump, or a builder's engineer has asked for clean ground to a set depth, we grind deeper and chase the roots out. Tell us what's going in afterwards and we'll set the depth to suit.

How deep do you grind, and can I plant straight after?

Standard is 100 to 200mm below ground level, which is plenty for turf, garden beds and most landscaping. If you're pouring concrete or putting in a pool we go deeper, and we'll say so at the quote. For planting, one thing to know: fresh grindings are high in carbon and they pull nitrogen out of the soil as they break down. If you're putting a new tree or shrub in the same spot, either cart the grindings off and backfill with clean soil, or mix in a good handful of blood and bone. We can take the grindings away if you'd rather not deal with them. Most people on smaller blocks around here do exactly that, because a big camphor stump produces more mulch than a townhouse courtyard can absorb.

Can your machine get into my back yard?

Usually, yes. Access is the first thing we check because so many homes in the area are post-war brick with a narrow side gate as the only way through. Our smallest grinder walks through most side gates and handles a set of steps. For wider access we bring a bigger machine and get the job done faster. If the only way in is over the neighbour's or through the house, we'll work that out with you at the quote stage rather than turning up and finding out. On the steeper streets off Mt Gravatt-Capalaba Road we sometimes park up top and walk the gear down. Send Troy a photo of the gate and the stump when you call on 0400 721 715 and he'll tell you on the spot.

Do I need a council permit to remove a tree in Upper Mount Gravatt?

It depends on the tree and the property. Brisbane City Council has vegetation protection provisions that can cover significant trees, and plenty of properties here carry specific overlays on top of that, including the bushfire-prone mapping across part of the suburb. The safest move is to look your address up on the council's property mapping before booking anything. If you're not sure how to read it, ring us and we'll walk you through what to search for. We won't cut a protected tree without the right approval in place, and we'll tell you straight if we think an application is needed. Stump grinding on an already-felled tree generally doesn't need a permit, but the tree removal that came before it might have. Ring Troy on 0400 721 715 and he'll help you work out which box your tree sits in.

What does stump grinding cost?

It depends on three things: the diameter of the stump, how easy it is to get a machine to it, and what the ground's like underneath. A small ornamental in an open front yard is quick. A metre-wide camphor laurel behind a narrow gate on a rocky slope is a different job. Ground conditions here vary block to block because of the cherts and valley fill under this part of Brisbane, and hitting rock slows a grind right down. That's why we quote on site rather than over the phone. There are no hidden costs. If you've got several stumps, say so, because doing them in one visit is always better value than separate trips. Call Troy on 0400 721 715.

How long does a stump grind take?

Most single suburban stumps take under an hour on the machine, plus time for setting up and cleaning up. A cluster of small ornamentals in a townhouse courtyard might be done inside an hour. A mature camphor laurel or fig with a wide root flare, on a tight access block, can run half a day once you factor in walking the machine in and chasing surface roots. Rock is the variable nobody can see from the street. We give you a realistic window at the quote, and if we find something underneath that changes it, we tell you before we keep going rather than after. You won't get a surprise on the invoice.

Do you do more than stump grinding?

Yes. Stump grinding is where we started rather than all we do. We handle tree removal, pruning and trimming to AS 4373, deadwood removal, storm damage make-safe, tree lopping where it's appropriate, and tree planting. We run climbing crews and a spider EWP, which is an elevated work platform on tracks, for work in tight back yards where a truck-mounted unit can't reach. A lot of jobs in the area start as a stump enquiry and turn into a look at the rest of the trees while we're there. Happy to do both in one visit. Ring Troy on 0400 721 715 and run the whole list past him, stumps and trees together, and he'll sort out what needs doing first.
