Local stump grinding in Carindale
After tree removal in Carindale, or a stump ground out flush with the lawn? We're Stump Grind It, a family run crew based at Wishart, about ten minutes down Mt Gravatt-Capalaba Road from Westfield Carindale. Troy started the business in 2015 with one grinder and a ute. His three boys grew up helping on weekends. They're climbers now, and they still do most of the grinding.
Carindale yards keep us busy. Big blocks, brick and tile homes from the seventies and eighties, and gum trees that were saplings when the streets went in. When one of those comes down, the stump is the bit most crews leave behind. We take it out properly, 100 to 200mm below ground level as standard, deeper if you're pouring concrete or putting in a pool.
Stumps are the specialty. We do the whole tree too: removals, pruning, deadwood, storm make safe. Ring Troy on 0400 721 715 and we'll come out and price it.
Stump Grinding services in Carindale
Stump Grinding
This is where Troy started and it's still the job we get asked for most. Our machines run from a narrow walk behind grinder that fits through a standard Carindale side gate to a tracked unit for the big gum and fig butts out on the larger blocks. Standard grind is 100 to 200mm below ground level, so you can turf straight over the top. We backfill with the grindings, rake it level and blow the paths down before we go.
Tree Removal
Removals here run from a dead poinciana over a pool fence to a twenty metre gum leaning at the house. Blocks off Winstanley Street and Old Cleveland Road often have power lines, a pergola and the neighbour's Colorbond fence inside the drop zone, so we rig and lower in sections rather than fell. Our spider EWP, which means an elevated work platform or cherry picker, gets us up safely where climbing isn't sensible. The stump can come out the same visit.
Tree Pruning And Trimming
Pruning is about making a tree safer, not just smaller. We thin canopies, cut out deadwood and lift limbs off roofs and gutters, which matters on the older jacarandas and mango trees through this neighbourhood. Storm season gets going from November, and a heavy one sided canopy is what fails first. All pruning follows Australian Standard AS 4373, so no topping the tree and leaving stubs that shoot back thicker than before. We don't do hedges, topiary or mowing.
Surface Root Chasing
Figs, poincianas and jacarandas send surface roots a long way, and on the flatter ground near Bulimba Creek they lift lawns, footpaths and driveway edges. Root chasing means we follow those roots out from the stump and grind them below the surface, so the mower stops catching them. We locate underground services first, because water and irrigation lines sit shallow in a lot of Carindale gardens. Anything we can't cut safely, we'll point out and explain why.
Emergency Storm Work
Brisbane summer storms come through hard and fast. We take make safe calls for split limbs, trees on fences and anything hung up over a roof, and we're on the road from 6am. Our crews carry chippers, so the mess leaves with us instead of sitting on your verge for a fortnight. Yards near Bulimba Creek stay soft for days after a big one, so we bring bog mats and keep the turf from getting churned.
Arborist Advice
Sometimes the tree doesn't need to come down. Our arborists will walk the yard with you and give you a straight answer on what's safe to keep, what needs a prune and what's past it. Brisbane City Council protects some vegetation through its significant tree register, vegetation protection orders and heritage overlays, and a few Carindale streets sit inside those mapped areas. We check the property before we quote, so you're not left holding a compliance problem afterwards.
About stump grinding in Carindale
Carindale sits on the ridges and gullies east of Mount Gravatt, and the trees tell you when the streets went in. Most of the suburb was built between the mid seventies and the nineties, so you get brick and tile homes on generous blocks with trees that are now forty to fifty years old. Jacarandas, poincianas, silky oaks, mangoes and plenty of planted gums. Trees that age are past the pretty stage and well into the maintenance stage, and that's most of what we get called out for.
Long term owners plan years ahead, so a lot of our jobs here are stumps that have to go because a deck, a pool or a new shed is going in next month. Grind depth changes with that. A standard 100 to 200mm gets you turf and garden beds. Concrete, pavers or a pool shell needs us deeper and wider, with the structural roots chased out as well.
Access is the other thing that shapes a Carindale quote. Streets like Winstanley Street, Surbiton Court and Scrub Road sit near the Bulimba Creek corridor, and those yards can hold water for days after heavy rain. Brisbane City Council lists flood alert reference points at Winstanley Street, Surbiton Court, the Scrub Road footbridge and the Bulimba Creek Bikeway underpass, and property level risk is something council assesses block by block. We plan wet sites around it: bog mats on the lawn, the smaller tracked grinder instead of the heavy one, and a different day if the ground won't carry the machine. Up the hill behind Pacific Golf Club and around Carindale Library it's the opposite problem. Tight side gates, retaining walls and steps down to the back lawn. Our narrow grinder walks through most side gates and up a set of steps, which saves pulling a fence panel out.
Council rules are worth sorting before you book anything in. Some trees are protected, and parts of the suburb near mapped heritage places carry overlay requirements. We check the address against council mapping when we quote, not after the job, and if a permit is needed we'll say so and tell you what it involves.
We're based at Wishart, ten minutes away on Mt Gravatt-Capalaba Road, so this is home turf for the boys. We work the same ageing gums and figs over in Mansfield, and up on the steeper ground through Mount Gravatt East where machines have to be winched in. A fair few of our Wishart customers found us through a neighbour on this side of the creek. Out near Belmont Bushland Reserve we take extra care with habitat trees, checking for hollows and nesting before anything comes down.
Why locals call Stump Grind It
Family Run Since 2015
Troy still quotes the jobs and still runs a grinder. His three boys work alongside him, and the same crew that looks at your Carindale yard is the crew that turns up on the day. No call centre, no subcontractor you've never met. That's how it's been since the first stump in 2015.
Stumps Are The Specialty
Most tree crews grind stumps as an afterthought. We started as a stump business and still run it that way, with machines sized for tight side gates, steps and sloping back yards. Ask how deep we can go on your job and you'll get a number, not a shrug. Fully insured.
Clear Quotes, Tidy Finish
You get the price in writing before we start. No hidden costs. The grindings go back in the hole, the yard gets raked and blown, and the timber leaves on the truck unless you want it cut to firewood length and stacked.
Carindale stump grinding FAQs
How deep do you grind a stump?
Standard grind is 100 to 200mm below ground level. That's deep enough to turf over, run a mower across or plant a garden bed on top. If you're pouring a slab, laying pavers or putting in a pool, we go deeper and wider and chase the big structural roots out, because concrete over a rotting stump will move on you later. Tell us what's going in above it when we quote and we'll set the depth for that. Rock, underground services and retaining walls can all change what the machine can safely reach, and we'll say so upfront.
What does stump grinding cost in Carindale?
We price per job and you get the number before we start. What moves it: stump diameter, the species and how hard the timber is, how many stumps you've got, root spread, backyard access and the depth you need. A camphor laurel butt beside a driveway is a different job to three small palm stumps on open lawn. Ring us with the address and a rough diameter across the top and we can usually give you a ballpark on the phone, then confirm it on site. No hidden costs.
Do I need council approval to remove a tree in Carindale?
Sometimes, yes. Brisbane City Council protects some trees through vegetation protection orders and its significant tree register, and properties near mapped heritage places sit under overlay requirements. Blocks backing onto the Bulimba Creek corridor can carry vegetation constraints too. We check your address against council mapping before we quote, and if the tree is protected we'll tell you what's involved rather than start cutting and hope. Trees that are dead or dangerous are handled differently again. Send us the address and we'll look it up for you.
Can you get a grinder into a backyard with no side access?
Usually we can. The smallest machine walks through most standard side gates, and handles steps with ramps. Where the only way in is through a garage or under the house, we protect the floors and wheel it through. If a fence panel has to come out, we take it out and put it back the same day. Steep blocks up behind the golf course sometimes need the tracked machine winched down to the lawn. Where nothing fits, we'll tell you straight when we quote instead of finding out on the morning.
What happens to the grindings and the timber?
Your call. Most people want the hole backfilled with the grindings, raked level and blown down, and that's what we do by default. If you're planting straight away we can cart the grindings off and bring soil in instead, because fresh grindings are woody and tie up nitrogen while they break down. Trunk wood and limbs go on the truck, or we can cut them to firewood length and stack them if you've got a fire pit. Chipped mulch can stay for the garden beds if you want it.
Why not just leave the stump in the ground?
Three reasons we see over and over in Carindale yards. Termites: a rotting stump is a food source sitting metres from the house, and this side of Brisbane has plenty of them. Trip hazards: stumps and surface roots hidden in couch grass catch feet, mower blades and whipper snipper cord. Regrowth: gums, camphor laurels and poincianas shoot from the stump and roots for years, so you end up with a thicket where the tree used to be. Grinding it out below ground level deals with all three in the one visit.
How soon can you get here after a storm?
Make safe calls jump the queue. If a limb is hung up over a roof or a tree is down across a fence, ring us and we'll get a crew to you as fast as we can. We work 7 days, 6am to 6pm. We're based at Wishart, about ten minutes from most Carindale streets, so you're not waiting on a crew crossing town. Call 0400 721 715 and tell us what's come down.
