Local stump grinding in Shailer Park
Got a tree that's gone from handy shade to a problem? We do tree removal in Shailer Park, and we grind the stump out while we're there. No coming back in a month. No leaving you with a lump of gum tree sitting in the middle of the lawn for the mower to find.
We're Stump Grind It. Troy started the business in 2015 with one grinder. His three boys grew up helping on weekends. They're on the tools full time now, climbing and running the machines. We're based at Wishart, so the run down the motorway is our patch, not a long-haul job we squeeze in at the end of the week.
Most of this suburb went up from the 1970s on, and the trees planted back then are full size now. Spotted gums over the roofline. A camphor laurel lifting the driveway. Jacaranda roots pushing at a retaining wall.
We'll come out, look at the tree, check the access and give you a quote before anything starts. Call Troy on 0400 721 715.
Stump Grinding services in Shailer Park
Tree Removal
Big gums leaning over the house, a camphor laurel too close to the slab, or a tree that's gone brittle after a wet summer. We take them down in sections with ropes and rigging when there's no room to fell, which is most Shailer Park backyards once you count the pool, the shed and the neighbour's fence. Power lines along the older streets get assessed before a single cut. You get a written quote, a crew that cleans up properly, and the stump ground out in the same visit.
Stump Grinding
Grinding is where we started in 2015 and it's still the specialty. Standard depth is 100 to 200mm below ground level, which suits turf, a garden bed and a mower. We go deeper when something's going over the top, and on these 1970s blocks that's usually a new slab, a pool surround or a fence footing. Some people ring asking about stump removal and picture an excavator and a crater. Grinding gets the same result with far less damage to the yard, and the grindings backfill the hole.
Surface Root Grinding
Figs, poincianas and camphor laurels planted on the original blocks send roots along the surface, and fifty years on they lift lawns, paths and driveway slabs. We chase those roots back with the grinder and cut them out where they're doing damage, without stripping the tree of what holds it up. Water, gas and comms services get located first. On the older Shailer Park streets the sewer line often runs straight through the root zone, so we check before the teeth go anywhere near it.
Tree Pruning and Trimming
Not every tree has to come out. A lot of the tree pruning we do in Shailer Park is deadwood removal from mature spotted gums before storm season, plus clearance off roofs, gutters and solar panels. Tree trimming to lift a canopy can bring the light back into a shaded yard without touching the trunk. We prune for shape and health. No chainsaw haircuts. If a tree is worth keeping, we'll say so and quote you the prune instead of the removal.
Storm Damage Callouts
Brisbane storms come through hot and fast from November to March, and they find the weak limbs first. We make safe before anything else: get the hanging limb down, clear the driveway, take the load off the fence and the roof. Then we book in the full clean-up and the grind. If a tree has come across a boundary we'll talk to both neighbours so nobody's guessing. Ring early, because the week after a big storm across Shailer Park fills up quickly.
Climbing and EWP Access
Some trees can't be reached from the ground. Our climbers work on rope, and where the ground allows we bring in an EWP, which is an elevated work platform, a cherry picker. Backyards that fall away toward the creek reserves here get the climb, not the machine. Most side gates are no trouble for the small grinder, and bog mats go down on turf so you're not left with wheel ruts across the lawn. Access gets sorted at the quote, never on the day.
About stump grinding in Shailer Park
Shailer Park sits between the Pacific Motorway and the bushland reserves on the southern edge of Brisbane, and the tree work here follows the way the suburb was built. Most of the streets came out of land releases that started in the 1970s, with the Kimberley Park estate marketed from 1973. Blocks were generous back then. The trees the first owners planted have had fifty years to fill out, so what we turn up to is rarely a small job. A sapling put in beside a new brick home in 1978 is a spotted gum with its crown over the patio today.
Most homes here are long-term owner-occupied, and that shows up in the yards. People have paved, pooled and renovated around the same trees for decades, which is why so many stumps end up wedged between a shed slab and a Colorbond fence instead of sitting out in the open lawn.
The species we see most around Shailer Park are spotted gum and blue gum on the bigger blocks, camphor laurel and jacaranda closer to the older pockets off Shailer Road, and the odd mango or poinciana left from an original garden. Camphor laurel is the one that causes arguments. It shoots straight back from a stump left in the ground, so if you want it gone it has to be ground out properly. Jacaranda and poinciana are the lawn lifters. Gums drop limbs in a storm without much warning at all.
Access changes street by street. Homes backing onto the creek reserves have yards that fall away sharply, and those jobs get climbed rather than driven. Newer infill in Shailer Park is tighter again, with a side gate and about a metre of clearance to the boundary. Our small grinder walks through a standard gate and up a set of steps, and bog mats go down before anything crosses turf. Where there's no gate at all, we'll look at lifting out a fence panel and putting it back, which is usually quicker and kinder to the yard than the alternatives.
Logan City Council has vegetation rules, and some of the newer estates carry covenants or development approval conditions that name individual trees. We'll flag anything that looks protected when we quote, and you confirm it with council before we book the job in. We don't guess on approvals. Work close to koala habitat gets extra care, so habitat trees are inspected before a cut.
We schedule street work around the school run. A chipper parked outside Shailer Park State School or Shailer Park State High School at half past eight helps nobody, so those jobs start after drop-off. If you're giving us directions, the Logan Hyperdome end of the suburb is the easy landmark to work from. We're based at Wishart, about twenty minutes up the motorway. We work the same 1970s and 80s housing stock through Rochedale South, and the big backyard gums around Eight Mile Plains are the same species we're grinding out here.
Why locals call Stump Grind It
Family Run Since 2015
Troy started with one grinder in 2015. His three boys helped on weekends, then came on full time. When you ring, you get the family that turns up. Same crew, same phone number, every job in Shailer Park and right across Brisbane.
Quotes Before We Start
We come out, look at the tree, check the access and give you a price in writing. No hidden costs. If council approval or a fence issue changes the job, you hear about it before we start, not after.
Full Clean-Up Every Job
The clean-up is the part customers talk about most in the reviews. We rake, blow the driveway down, and cart the timber and chip away unless you want it kept. Bog mats protect the turf on the way in, and the grindings go back in the hole so the yard is usable the same afternoon.
Shailer Park stump grinding FAQs
Do I need council approval to remove a tree in Shailer Park?
Sometimes, and it's worth checking before you book anything in. Logan City Council has vegetation protection rules, and some of the newer estates carry covenants or development approval conditions that list trees you can't touch. Older established blocks are usually more straightforward. When we quote, we'll tell you if a tree looks like it falls under a protection rule, then you confirm it with council. We won't guess on approvals and we won't cut something that's meant to stay. If you want an arborist to look at the tree's health or safety before you decide, we can do that as part of the visit.
How deep do you grind a stump?
Standard is 100 to 200mm below ground level. That's deep enough to turf over, plant a garden bed, or run a mower across without hitting timber. If something is going over the top, tell us at the quote. A slab, a pool surround, a shed pad or a fence footing all need more depth, and we'll set the machine for it. Grinding takes out the big surface roots around the stump too, not just the lump you can see. We backfill with the grindings unless you'd rather we carted them off. Either way, the price is agreed before we start.
Can you get a grinder into a Shailer Park backyard with a narrow side gate?
Usually, yes. Our smallest machine is built to fit most standard side gates, and it can be walked up and down steps with the crew on the handles. Bog mats go down first so the turf doesn't get chewed on the way through. Sloping yards near the creek reserves take a bit longer, but they're not a problem. If there's genuinely no way in, we'll look at lifting a fence panel out and refitting it once the grind is done. We work all of this out at the quote so nobody cops a surprise on the day.
Will you grind the stump the same day you take the tree out?
That's how we quote it. Troy started the business in 2015 because tree crews would drop a tree and leave the stump behind for somebody else to sort out. He saw the gap and filled it. We do both parts. The tree comes down, the grinder goes in, and you're left with a yard you can actually use. On a big removal we'll occasionally come back the next morning for the grind if we run out of light, but it's all in the one quote.
Why not just leave the stump in the ground?
Three big reasons. Termites. A dead stump sitting in warm, wet southeast Queensland soil is a food source a few metres from your house, and they don't stop at the stump. Trip hazards. Kids run across a yard, adults mow it, and a low stump hidden in the grass is how ankles and mower blades get wrecked. Regrowth. Camphor laurel, privet and some figs will shoot straight back and you end up paying for the job twice. Then there's the practical one. You can't plant, pave or build over a stump.
What happens to the mulch, the timber and the mess?
The grindings go back into the hole by default, because they settle and you can turf straight over the top. If you'd rather have it clean for a planting or a slab, say the word and we'll take the lot away. Chip from a removal works the same way. Plenty of Shailer Park customers ask us to leave a pile for the garden beds, and plenty want the driveway blown down with nothing left behind. Firewood rounds we can cut to length and stack for you if there's a fireplace or a fire pit.
How fast can you get out after a storm in Shailer Park?
As fast as we can, and we put the unsafe stuff first: limbs hanging over a roof, a tree down on a fence, branches near power lines. We work 7 days, 6am to 6pm, and after a decent Brisbane storm the phone runs hot from first light. Ring 0400 721 715 and tell us what's moved and what's touching the house. If it's on the power lines, call Energex first, then us. We'll make the tree safe, then book the clean-up and the grind.
