Local stump grinding in Alexandra Hills

Need tree removal in Alexandra Hills? We're Stump Grind It, a family-run crew based at our Wishart depot, and we've been working Redlands yards since 2015. Troy started the business with one grinder. His three boys grew up helping on weekends. Now they climb, run the EWP and operate the grinders full-time.

Stumps are our specialty. Most tree crews cut the trunk, load the truck and leave the stump sitting there. We do the whole job, from the first cut to the last bucket of grindings raked off your lawn.

The suburb's a mix of 1970s and 80s brick homes on decent blocks, plus newer builds along Hanover Drive and Winchester Road. That means big established gums, jacarandas and poincianas with root systems that lift paths and crack driveways. We grind stumps in front yards and bring machines down tight side gates.

Call Troy on 0400 721 715 for an on-site quote. We'll tell you straight what the job needs, what it'll cost, and when we can get there. No surprises on the invoice.

Stump Grinding services in Alexandra Hills

Stump Grinding And Removal

Our core work. We grind 100 to 200mm below ground level as standard, deeper if you're laying turf, pouring concrete or putting in a pool. Grind depth matters here because so many blocks in the area have shallow clay under thin topsoil, and a half-ground stump will throw suckers within a season. We bring machines to suit the access, from a walk-behind unit that fits through most side gates up to a tracked grinder for open front yards. The grindings go back in the hole or off in the truck, your call.

Tree Removal

Full removals in tight backyards are our bread and butter. Plenty of homes here back onto bushland or sit close to the Coolnwynpin Creek line, so we rig and lower limbs in sections rather than dropping them. That keeps weight off fences, sheds and the neighbour's patio. We use a spider EWP, an elevated work platform, a bit like a cherry picker on tracks, when a tree's too dead or too brittle to climb safely. Stump ground the same visit if you want it.

Root Chasing

Surface roots from figs, poincianas and jacarandas are the number one complaint we hear from residents. They lift lawns, crack the footpath and jam the mower. Root chasing means we follow the main laterals out from the stump and grind them below the surface, so the lawn sits flat again. On blocks near Hilliards Creek we're careful about how far we go, because the ground stays soft after rain and there's a platypus corridor nearby worth protecting. We'll walk the yard with you and mark what goes.

Tree Pruning And Trimming

Not every tree needs to come out. Tree pruning in Alexandra Hills is often the smarter fix, especially on older gums where a heavy limb sits over the roofline. We prune for structure and safety, taking out deadwood and reducing weight on the limbs that matter, rather than just making the canopy smaller. Tree trimming to clear gutters, solar panels and powerline clearances is common on the 70s and 80s homes through the area. If a prune will do, we'll say so and quote it that way.

Emergency Storm Work

Brisbane storms come through hard in summer and the older gums drop limbs. We take make-safe calls and get out fast to cut the hazard down and clear the driveway. Properties backing onto the Scribbly Gums Conservation Area and the bushland between Windemere Road and Vienna Road cop the worst of it, partly because those trees have room to grow big and partly because access is tight once something's down across a fence line. Ring Troy and we'll tell you honestly how soon we can be there.

Arborist Assessments

Arborist services for when you need more than a quote. That covers tree health checks and advice on whether a tree can be retained safely. Redland City Council protects a lot of vegetation, so knowing whether your tree needs a permit before you book a removal saves you a headache.

About stump grinding in Alexandra Hills

Alexandra Hills sits in the middle of the Redlands, about 25 minutes from our Wishart depot. Owner-occupiers on long-held blocks means mature trees. Trees planted in the 70s and 80s that nobody's touched in forty years.

The housing stock tells you what to expect underground. Brick and tile from the 70s and 80s across the older streets, timber-framed places, and newer builds through Hanover Drive and Winchester Road. Older blocks have services running shallow, so we locate underground utilities before a grinder touches dirt. We've hit enough old irrigation and unmarked Telstra runs over the years to know that ten minutes with a locator beats a day of repairs.

Soil is the other thing. Thin topsoil over clay through much of the suburb, which means roots run wide and shallow instead of going down. That's why so many jacarandas and poincianas here lift the footpath and why grinding a stump flush with the ground is useless. Cut it at the surface and you'll have suckers back before Christmas. We go 100 to 200mm down as standard, and further if something's going on top of it.

Then there's water. Hilliards Creek and Coolnwynpin Creek both flash-flood in heavy rain, and if you back onto either one the ground can stay soft for days. We bring bog mats to spread the weight of the machines so we're not carving ruts across your lawn. There's medium landslide risk mapped along Hilliards Creek toward the Cleveland boundary and around Judy Holt Recreation Reserve, so on steeper creek-side blocks we plan the drop zones and the machine path before we start rather than working it out on the day.

Bushfire is a real consideration on the western side. The Greater Glider Conservation area between Windemere Road and Vienna Road is mapped medium to high bushfire hazard, and homes adjoining that bushland can cop ember attack during a nearby fire. We don't leave green waste stacked on site over summer on those properties. It goes out the same day. When we're working near mapped habitat we take extra care and work to Redland City Council's vegetation rules rather than guessing.

Access varies street to street. Older homes around Flinders Street and Vienna Road often have a narrow side gate and a Colorbond fence you can't just pull down, so we bring the walk-behind grinder. Newer estates have wider driveways but tighter rear setbacks, which changes how we rig a removal. Steps aren't a problem either, our smaller machine walks up and down them.

We work right across Brisbane, including the bayside, so the crew knows the local stock well. Neighbouring Capalaba is a short run up the road and shares the same clay-over-sandstone ground we deal with here, and the jobs we do in Shailer Park run to similar big-gum removals on established blocks. Same trees, same access puzzles, same clean-up standard.

One last thing worth knowing. Redland City Council protects a lot of vegetation, and some trees need approval before they come down. Rather than let you find that out the hard way, we'll check the situation when we quote and tell you what's involved. If you need a permit, we'll say so. If you don't, we'll get it booked in. Ring Troy on 0400 721 715 and we'll sort out which one it is.

Why locals call Stump Grind It

Family Run Since 2015

Troy started with one grinder and a ute. His three boys came through on weekends, finished school, and now run the machines. When you call, you get the family that turns up. Not a call centre passing your job to a subbie.

Straight Prices, No Surprises

We quote on site, in writing, before the job starts. A small backyard stump in the area costs less, while a big gum with limited access costs more, and we'll explain exactly why before you commit. Ring us for a quote.

Tidy Clean Up Every Time

The clean-up is what customers keep mentioning in the reviews. Bog mats on the turf, tarps under the grinder, grindings raked back in or carted away, and a blow-down of the paths before we leave. You shouldn't be able to tell we drove a machine across your lawn.

Alexandra Hills stump grinding FAQs

How deep do you grind a stump?

Standard is 100 to 200mm below ground level. That's deep enough to kill the stump, stop regrowth and give you enough soil to lay turf or put a garden bed over the top. If you're pouring a slab, building a fence line, putting in a pool or doing a new build, we go deeper, sometimes 300mm or more, and we'll chase the main laterals out too. The clay under a lot of the local topsoil means roots spread sideways rather than down, so on a big jacaranda or fig the root plate can run several metres from the trunk. We'll walk it with you first and agree on a depth that suits what you're doing afterwards. Grinding flush with the surface is cheaper, but it's a false economy. Suckers come back, termites still have something to eat, and you can't plant over it.

Do I need a council permit to remove a tree in Alexandra Hills?

Sometimes, yes. Redland City Council protects a fair bit of vegetation, and the rules depend on the species, the size of the tree, whether it's mapped habitat, and what your property's overlays say. Trees near the bushland corridors and creek lines are more likely to need approval than a self-sown gum in the middle of a suburban back lawn. We can't approve anything ourselves, but we've been through the process plenty of times and we'll tell you when we quote whether we think you need to talk to council first. Going ahead without approval can mean a fine, so it's worth the phone call.

What does stump grinding cost around here?

It depends on the diameter of the stump, how hard the timber is, how much root there is to chase and how easy the machine is to get to the spot. A single small stump in an open front yard is the cheapest job we do. A big gum behind a locked side gate on a sloping creek-side block takes longer and costs more. Hardwood gums are slower to grind than softer timber like poinciana. We come out, look at it, and give you a written quote. Call Troy on 0400 721 715 and we'll book a time to come and have a look.

Can you get a grinder into my backyard?

Usually, yes. Our smallest machine fits through most side gates and will walk up and down steps, which covers most of the older brick-and-tile homes in the area. If the gate's narrower or there's no side access at all, we've got options: taking a fence panel off and putting it back. Tell us the gate width and send a couple of photos when you call and we'll know before we arrive what we're bringing. We'd rather work that out in advance than turn up with the wrong machine and waste your morning.

Is pruning an option instead of removing the tree?

Often it is, and we'll tell you if we think so. A lot of the calls we get are about a limb over the roof or a canopy that's gone too heavy, not a tree that's actually dangerous. Good pruning takes out the deadwood and reduces the weight on the limbs that matter, which makes the tree safer without gutting it. That's different from lopping, where somebody just cuts everything back to a stub and the tree pushes out weak regrowth that fails in the next storm. Mature gums, in particular, respond badly to heavy topping. If the tree's structurally sound and just needs a tidy, pruning is cheaper than removal and you keep the shade. If it's dead, hollow, lifting the slab or dropping limbs on the driveway, removal is the honest answer.

What happens to the timber and the grindings?

Your choice. Most people want the grindings put straight back in the hole, topped with soil so you can turf over it. Others want them out completely, especially if they're planting something new or the pile would sit too proud. We can leave the trunk cut into firewood lengths if you've got a fire pit, or take the whole lot away. On properties adjoining the bushland on the western side of the suburb we don't leave green waste stacked over summer, because a pile of dry offcuts next to a house in a mapped bushfire area is a bad idea. That goes out the same day.

How soon can you get to a storm job?

For a make-safe, it depends on how many calls have come in and how bad the weather is. After a big Brisbane storm we prioritise the hazards first: limbs on roofs, trees across driveways, anything hanging over a path or a powerline clearance. Full clean-up and stump grinding gets booked in after the make-safe is done. We're open 7 days, 6am to 6pm. If it's urgent, ring 0400 721 715.
